What is a Hair Follicle Drug Test?
A hair follicle drug test is a test where a small amount of hair is removed from the head or another part of the body and then analyzed to see if one has used drugs within the detection period, which is about 3 months. It is used because it can reveal drug use over a longer period of time than urine, blood, or saliva tests. Saliva tests have the shortest detection period, of one to three days. Blood and urine tests are intermediate and hair tests have the longest detection period. However, it cannot detect drug use in the hours just before the test. Hair follicle drug tests may be required before types of jobs where it is important the employee never uses drugs like truck driving and security agencies like police and FBI. There are many drugs which are tested for. This includes opioids like oxycontin, stimulants like methamphetamine, benzodiazepines like Xanax, hallucinogens like PCP, cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, and sometimes designer drugs like Spice. It is said every half inch of hair covers 90 days. Theoretically, they could go back even further for people who have long hair. So, should you leave your hair long or cut it? It stands to reason the older hair may have lost some drug residues, but then you are keeping a longer history of drug use. Shorter hair, there is less history, but possibly higher drug concentrations. Where exactly do they take the hair? From the ends or near the scalp? We will answer each question in turn as we continue research these issues with you. It could determine your livelihood, so it’s definitely important.
Hair follicle drug test detection times
This chart comes from a company in the drug testing business. it demonstrates that with low usage of some drugs, you still stand a chance of passing a hair follicle test, but with high use, there is just no way. It also shows that for marijuana, the amount hanging around in your fat cells does not say how much you’ve been using, because people store and get rid of marijuana metabolites at such different rates.
How long does marijuana stay in your hair follicles?
This chart confirms the 90-day rule for detection of drugs in hair, including revealing how long thc and weed stays in your hair follicles. Note that many companies do indeed test for nicotine. Smokers are more likely to have health problems which drive up health-care costs.
Pros and Cons of Hair Follicle Drug Tests
Pass a hair drug test in 24 hours (1 day)
It’s not clear as day that people are taking intentional actions to pass a hair drug test, but it is clear that people are sometimes passing the test after having used drugs, sometimes regularly, within the 90-day window. So, how are they doing it? There are two methods that seem to be hot on the internet right now, called The Jerry G and the Macujo Method. We have not discovered for certain where these colorful names come from, so if you know, drop a comment on us below.
The Jerry G Method
Jerry G is apparently a real person whose screename on drug test forums is Jerry G. Let’s be real, this method could ruin your hair, or cause an inflammatory reaction. So, if you’ve never bleached your hair before, proceed with caution, follow all the instructions on the box and for the most part, don’t do anything you wouldn’t normally do. If you’ve never bleached your hair, proceed with caution.
|Toxin Rid 10 Day Detox Program||Mega Clean + PreCleanse Pills||Toxin Rid 3 Day Detox Program||Powdered Human Urine|
Step 1. Mr. Jerry G suggests for the first step, you need to stop smoking weed for 10 days. 10 days is 1/9 of 90 days, so that’s 1/9 less drug residues you will have in your hair anyway. If you hadn’t been using much drugs to begin with, this might be enough. So, by all means, don’t proceed to step 2 if there’s no need.
Step 2. Now, you need to bleach your hair with a hair dye that has ammonia in it, on the same day you stop smoking. This is to break open the cuticle and flush out the contents. This should work, I mean, if bleach can affect the pigment in your hair, surely it can get to those drug residues too and either flush them out or alter their structure. At this point, if you’ve dyed your hair before and didn’t get damaged hair or burning scalp, then you might come out of this none the worse for wear.
Step 3. You wanna wash your hair out with one of those colorful detox shampoos like Toxin Wash. Some successful toking hair-washers feel like you need a shampoo with Aloe, like Toxin Rid with Aloe. This may or may not be the case. Do your research and tell us what you think.
Step 4. On day 10, bleach and dye your hair again. Use your aloe-based shampoo again.
Step 5. Day of the test, you’re gonna put a baking soda paste in yo head. Maybe you’ve never done this before, but baking soda is fairly safe. Leave it in your hair for 15 minutes, wash it out. That’s gonna neutralize acids in the hair and may help wash out or neutralize drug residues. Shampoo again with your detox shampoo with aloe.
Step 6. The coup de grace, wash yo head with Ultra Clean Shampoo by Zydot.
We would say this approach has fairly good theoretical underpinning, to break open the cuticle and flush it out. We know it gets inside the hair cuz otherwise it couldn’t affect the pigment. There are no dangerous ingredients in the case of people who have dyed their hair before and know they don’t go into anaphylaxis from hair dye. If we had to endorse one, we would say this is the safer option. Dye your hair twice, wash with detox shampoo, no biggie. Now, the next method is a bit more complicated, cuz it contains some ingredients one would not safely put in one’s hair. Next is the Macujo method.
Pass a hair drug test in 24 hours (1 day): The Macujo Method
- Warm water
- Goggles (this should let you know, not to be taken lightly)
- Disposable Gloves (This is for if you have wounds on your hands, not for sensitive hands. If your hands are ‘sensitive’, then so is your scalp and you shouldn’t be using this method). Change gloves after dealing with each chemical.
- Shower caps
- Vinegar, normal grocery store stuff
- Pink Clean and Clear acne wash, if you had acne as a teen, you are very familiar
- Toxin rid shampoo with Aloe or another aloe based, preferably detox shampoo
- Pack of liquid Tide detergent
- Ultra Clean by Zydot shampoo
You should notice quite a few of these ingredients are not safe to put in your hair. If you have ever had any inflammatory reaction to putting anything on the skin or scalp, I would say skip this method. Anyone with high levels of inflammation or allergies is gonna react to this stuff. Also, if it’s burning too badly, you are gonna want to abort. Pain is not just a phantom ghost in the machine, it is the conscious correlate of physical inflammation that is surely happening. That means damage is either happening, or the channels that respond to damage are being toyed with and an inflammatory reaction from the immune system is gonna respond and cause a lot of collateral damage. That’s why some ‘chemical burns’ are not caused by the chemical burning your skin at all, it’s caused by the immune system responding and burning your skin, thinking there must be dangerous microbes causing that kinda pain.
Here’s how to do it brother:
- Start with the vinegar. Original instructions say to thoroughly rinse the hair first, but my intuition suggests you don’t wanna do that because you’re just adding another barrier on top of the oil. Since you wanna remove the oil from your hair in order to get to the cuticle and break it open, go with the straight vinegar, unless you have a sensitive scalp. Work it in all the way to the roots. Remember, they are gonna test the first inch and a half at the roots. Which suggests as well that you are gonna wanna have an inch and a half of hair on your head, so don’t cut it, or they will go into the arm pit. I doubt they would go to the genitals but it’s possible if the job were important enough like FBI. And you don’t wanna be putting all this stuff on your genital hair, so keep the hair on your head.
- Now, you are gonna work the Clean and Clear into your hair, with the vinegar still in. You’re gonna leave this in for 30 minutes with a shower cap on. This mixture is to break open the hair cuticle and access those incriminating drug residues the hair has been greedily hoarding.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly, get all that stuff out.
- Now you gotta wash your hair with Aloe shampoo by Toxin Rid. Those who swear by this method caution that you must use the old patented shampoo, which is still sold presumably. However, if you can’t locate it, get a detox shampoo that contains aloe. If nothing else, the aloe will help prevent scalp inflammation.
- Repeat the shampoo and rinse.
- Now, use a few drops of Tide laundry detergent and wash your hair with it. If you tend to get itchy or if the idea seems repulsive, you can skip this step, but don’t then complain about the method not working. We all gotta decide how much we are willing to risk. You are risking your hair and your scalp if you shampoo your hair with Tide detergent. The adage for today is: you really shouldn’t wash your hair or your clothes with anything you wouldn’t eat or you eventually lose track of all the toxins you are exposed to and then you get sick and can’t find out what’s causing it, but that’s a discussion for better times. Right now, you gotta get this job or avoid prison. This is important.
- Finally, right before your test, shampoo with Zydot Ultra Clean.
- Perform this method 3 times one day before the test, and once on the day of the test. Now, you have broken open the hair cuticle and gotten out the drug metabolites.
Does this method work? There are no scientific studies on it that we are aware of, but we know some who use it have passed their test despite regular drug use. We also know that various detox and masking agents that were once considered myths are actually now scientifically proven to beat drug tests and drug companies are constantly evolving ways to beat the cheat methods. Scientists and drug-makers don’t have a monopoly on access to reality. If you can find the right chemical to throw into the mix, you can discover something that works that will take them months and thousands of dollars to study and find out how to detect or beat it. So, believe in yourself and make sure any risks you take are worth it. With the Macujo method, you are definitely risking your hair and your scalp. Your hands too if you don’t put some gloves on. You could risk your eyes if it leaks into your eyes. This is not a risk you should take unless your livelihood is really on the line. The Jerry G method is quite a bit safer. You could also modify the Macujo method by for example, taking out the laundry detergent. Detergent has the proteases in it that break down the drug residues. Maybe try bromelain or papain instead, meat tenderizers you can get from the grocery store. First try it out by soaking some wet hair in the meat tenderizer. Make sure that the level of tenderness the hair attains is not too tender for you and your hair isn’t too broken to be tested on. But, meat tenderizer is totally edible, so it’s not gonna be too harsh on your scalp. You just don’t want your hair to come out so tender that it’s falling apart. Detergent also contains enzymes that may damage your hair and scalp, could even leech into the blood stream. So, at the very least, if you can’t afford damaged hair, don’t use this method. If you are applying for a job as a hair model, don’t use this method to pass the drug test. Your hair may be ruined.
Bleaching and Dying, the science
Bleaching your hair is one of the most intuitive ways to try to beat a hair drug test. However, if your head hair looks bleached, the test administrator may opt instead for an armpit hair or a pubic hair. So, if you are going to bleach, make sure you use both bleach and color. The bleach oxidizes the melanin in the hair, then the hair color adds back your original hair color so that the hair does not look bleached and also seals the remaining drug residues in so that they are not easy to test for.
Believe it or not, this approach has been studied scientifically. A study published in the International Journal of Legal Medicine (Jurado, Kintz, Menéndez, & Repetto, 1997) compared bleached and dyed hair to untreated hair. They found in every case that detectable drug metabolites had decreased compared to untreated hair. Take that, drug testers, invaders of the privacy of Americans. However, they also found that the decreases in detectable drug metabolites were pretty much equal to the amount of hair damage you have. So, you should expect to damage the hair. Just make sure it is not obvious that you were trying to beat the drug test.
They found the following drug metabolites decreased by 40 to 60%:
That is totally enough for many people to pass a drug test, so skip any harmful methods which may be suggested unless you are desperate. Harmful and unsafe methods are not necessarily more effective. It just makes people feel like it must be more effective because it’s costing them so much pain or money.
For morphine, they found a greater than 60% reduction. Good news for morphine addicts, a rarity. Definitely get help if you are addicted to morphine. But even morphine addicts gotta have a job to be able to buy food on which to survive, no matter how tragic their plight. For THC, they found only a 30% reduction. So, a higher percentage of THC than metabolized THC-COOH remained present. They thoroughly examined the hair and confirmed that it was not the method, bleaching or dyeing, that made the difference, it was how much damage had been inflicted upon the hair, so that may be something you can’t avoid.
Shaving is the most intuitive thing to do, and is also a fail. If you shave your head, they will take from your pits or pubes. If that’s not available, they will give you a blood or urine test. Worst case scenario, they will disqualify you right off hand, especially if they knew that you had a full head of hair before you showed up to the drug test. So, don’t try shaving, it will most likely end up worse.
Detox Products: hair follicle drug testing shampoo
Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid Shampoo
In the world of drug test buckers, there has been much ado about the Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid. This is either a very carefully crafted marketing campaign to get rid of old product, or this stuff is really getting legitimate buzz for being effective. When I look at the price however, I become more than a little skeptical that maybe people are just fooling themselves that it must work because it’s so expensive. Far as we know, it contains aloe and propylene glycol, which is often used as a laxative. At least those two ingredients are safe to ingest, but if you are not in the habit of dropping a few hundred on what appears mostly to be just a regular shampoo, you might have to poo poo this shampoo. But, I’m just one person, listen to all the voices, especially if it’s a really high-paying job. You’ll make back your investment. Or, if it’s for court, you can weigh the cost against bail money.
Unintelligent and literal people are always fooled and impressed by high prices, treasuring the expensive wine when in fact, they can’t tell the difference between a cheap wine and a fine wine by taste. The atoms on earth are all the same age. The ape in us really comes out when we see a high price. But sometimes an inflated price is just that. Because things that are more valuable tend to cost more, we think that if something costs more, it must be more useful and valuable, but obviously that does not follow. Take your logic course again. But, if you normally throw away 200 bucks on nothing, then drop some on 5 oz of shampoo but do it because you are buying confidence, not results. You may or may not get results.
Zydot Ultra Clean
This shampoo was also referenced in the methods above. This very popular shampoo could run you a mere $9 to $15. This makes much more sense to us. Most likely, neither shampoo does anything special. You just need something that removes oil and residues. Shampoos are not usually bought in order to cause damage to the hair, but the fact is, damage is what you need to pass a drug test. You need damaged but intact hair, with less signs of tampering if you can, so don’t use a hair dye that is obviously not your natural color. If you come in with purple hair, they will suspect that it has been dyed, possibly in an effort to tamper with the drug test, or maybe just to sabotage your own job prospects.

As far as ingredients, they look rather much like common shampoo ingredients, but it’s not overly pricey so that’s fine. Also, there is aloe vera, which will reduce the redness and swelling you’re gonna get if you stick all those chemicals in your head (for a good cause we presume).
Does hair follicle drug testing shampoo work to beat a drug test?
We have seen old style Toxin rid shampoo and Zydot Ultra Clean get a lot of praise. I would say Zydot is worth a try because it’s not overly pricey and contains aloe vera. Aloe may not have any special ability to help you pass a drug test, but it will reduce inflammation from the other stuff you might put on your hair. Truth is, detox shampoo on its own is not gonna do the kinda damage you must do to the hair to make those drug residues undetectable. You will have to use a harsher method, then one of these shampoos can help. Since it’s merely an accessory to the crime, you might not wanna break the bank on it.
Does bleaching work?
Yes. Bleaching and dyeing are scientifically proven to reduce detectable drug concentrations. The mechanism seems to be merely damaging the hair, altering the drug metabolites, removing them, or pushing them deeper into the hair cortex so that they are harder to detect. In any case, damage to the hair is the hallmark of hair which has fewer levels of detectable drug residues. So, go ahead and make it a breaky, frizzy, bad hair day if you have to. Your job or your freedom could be on the line, you may have to sacrifice some hair.
Are detox shampoos legal?
That’s a complicated question. Truth is, it depends on what state you are in. States which make it criminal generally focus on prosecuting the sale of the product and manufacture, not possession. In South Carolina, an undercover agent purchased a Zydot product from a seller. The seller was arrested and convicted. He was re-convicted on appeal. So, courts in some states don’t have no love for someone trying to beat a drug test just to put food on their family.
These states have laws against detox products. Be sure to check the laws in your local jurisdiction before buying a detox product:
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
Question: Tell me something to make me feel better about what I’m doing.
Answer: I’ll try. If you are going to try anything that could be damaging, like the Tide drops, make sure it’s for a very good cause, your livelihood or your freedom. Else, just do the safer options and follow the directions on the bottle for bleaching or dyeing. These are causing intentional damage to your hair but people are willing to make that trade off just to look different. Hair bleach and dyes have their own warnings on the bottle and they can damage your eyes if you’re not careful, but they are OTC so apparently, not so many people destroy themselves with it.
You gotta feed your kids and yourself. It’s not the government’s or anyone else’s business what substances you put in your body. That’s for you to deal with, and your doctor, and your shrink. Maybe you even have a prescription. The illegal War on People is a very expensive failure for US taxpayers, and very profitable for drug dealers. Dealers mark up the price according to how hazardous are the conditions of transport, but then, more drug gets through than the markup so they can make a fortune really fast. Also, and most people don’t know this, cocaine and weed are not in any way expensive to produce. Weed is called weed because it is a weed. It grows wild all over the planet. The outrageous prices are due largely to the War on Drugs. You wanna take up your drug problems with your doctor, not with the guy who is holding that pay check or the keys to your freedom. You gotta get that first, and then you can afford the doc to get you out of this drug problem, if it is a problem for you.
Are you a drain on the productivity of the company due to your drug use? That’s something you will have to sort out. Some people use drugs medically and it makes them better workers. Remember, nobody has a monopoly on how useful a substance is. If you take morphine, it doesn’t really matter if your doctor told you to or not. The current opioid epidemic in the US started with legitimate doctor prescriptions. Some people use it in a way that makes them sick and less productive. That’s up to you, but even addicts have to eat. We get so cut-throat about the economic system we think we are in we forget, eating is more basic than any job or drug test. You gotta eat first, then you can build your morality after you have ensured your survival. So, there you have it. It’s okay, unless it’s illegal, in which case, don’t do it.
Is it possible to beat a hair follicle drug test? Science says the answer is yes. Social media says the answer is yes. We’re gonna say the answer is yes. But, there is a catch, there is always a catch. The catch is that you have to damage your hair. How else are you gonna get the drugs out? You gotta crack some eggs to make an omlet. Same principle, you gotta crack open some hair cuticles to get the drug residues out. The best way to do this for people who have dyed their hair before, is to dye it again, maybe even twice. Bleach it and dye it, both may work better than either alone. The study referenced below showed more than a 60% reduction in one drug metabolite, morphine. That’s superstar status right there, and that’s more effective than any detox shampoo you’re gonna get. Shampoos are made to flush the hair, not damage it. You are going for as much damage you can do and still have the hair intact. You’re gonna fry it, don’t think you won’t. But, that’s the point. So make sure it’s important. Your hair will grow back at a rate of about 1.5 inchces every 90 days. It is not legal for the testing company to test more than 1.5 inches of hair because that reveals a drug history longer than 90 days. In that, the law is on your side. So, bleach, dye, shampoo and you’re golden.
